Manny: Canine massage for muscle spasms post retirement from racing

Manny retired from racing in June 2020 at 4 years old. He was underweight at 33kg and had a fluffy, dandruffy (and smelly) kennel coat and evidence of numerous injuries including having only half a tail and missing a toe.

A couple of times in the first weeks of his foster care, Manny had episodes of muscle spasming in his front and hind limbs. Manny had a trip to the vet to ensure nothing sinister was going on and it was determined that his muscle spasms were likely due to the excessive scar tissue, through his lumbar region in particular, perhaps aggravated by the stress of rehoming. He showed evidence of arthritis. Manny was also unable to lie in a sphinx position due to his physical restrictions.

Manny started weekly veterinary acupuncture treatments, Chinese herbs and regular short remedial massage sessions to free up scar tissue and fascial adhesions.

Tension in his neck and shoulders eased quickly which made his gait smoother. He had a slower reduction in his hind quarters although any muscle spasming disappeared and his bald bum (very common with greyhounds who have raced) regrew its fur quickly. He was previously unable to jump into the back of a car or onto the bed but with improved flexibility he can manage these movements now.

Massage and Chinese medicine helped improve Manny's blood flow, reduce muscle tightness and fascial restrictions. Regular treatments should help him regain more flexibility in his lower back and hind legs and will manage symptoms of arthritis.

"Cal saw my foster grey for muscle spasms and it really seemed to loosen off his muscles. He was much more comfortable after a course of treatment. Wouldn't hesistate to use her services again." Rod, Manny's foster dad.
