Kevin the pug has multiple spinal issues at multiple levels of his spine. In summary, Kevin has caudal facet dysplasia, hip dysplasia, spondylosis and two bulging discs. Partly disabled and using a wheelchair, his family give Kevin everything they possibly can to live a brilliant life, despite his physical restrictions. They even founded D-Wheels to provide the best possible wheelchair for their boy and to help other pet parents facing the same difficulties as they have.
Kevin has acupuncture, is on herbal medicine and CBD oil, has a regular regimen of veterinary pain medicine, which is regularly tweaked to ensure its meeting his changing needs, and hydrotherapy to maintain his muscle mass.
His pawrents recruited DogsBody Health to give Kev massage to help with treating muscular trigger points, improving blood flow, managing muscle imbalances and joint range of motion, and giving him as much physical comfort as possible.
Kevin’s condition is going to deteriorate as the joints of his spine continue to fail and his muscle mass lessens due to age and lack of use. By managing his needs as they are, Kevin is having the very best life possible, despite his progressive condition. Within time we have also started to use laser therapy to manage inflammation and pain and to boost circulation in the limbs as he began to have less functional control.
Update: Kevin passed away in March 2024. He will be sorely missed by all of us who were a part of his journey. His legacy will forever live on through D-Wheels. If you need help with your disabled dog, his wonderful family are always willing to offer a supportive ear. Rest in peace, Kevin, may you have full function of your body over the rainbow bridge and still get the occasional hash brown. We miss you.
