Laser therapy for dogs

March 28, 2022 | Cal Savage

Laser therapy for dogs is a safe, drug-free way of treating your dog's pain, reducing inflammation and facilitating tissue healing. The laser we use on dogs does not cut tissue or cause tissue damage in any way.

When the laser passes through the cells it forces harmful nitric oxide out the cells and allows for tissues to be better oxygenated, metabolise effectively and function optimally.

DogsBody Health uses a class 4 high dose laser, often in combination with canine remedial massage, to treat musculoskeletal health issues. Having used low level laser on human clients for many years, we were excited to add veterinary laser to our skill set for use on our doggy clients.

How does laser therapy for dog's work?

Laser treatments use light at specific wavelengths to deliver energy to the cells of the body. This energy is measured in joules. The number of joules delivered into the tissues is determined by the parameters set by the therapist. The depth of the target area, the size of the dog, the coat colour and whether a condition is chronic or acute are all factors which will affect the dosage. By aiming the beam of light onto the desired tissues for the desired length of time the prescriptive amount of energy is delivered to the cells. When the laser passes through the cells it forces harmful nitric oxide out the cells and allows for tissues to be better oxygenated, metabolise effectively and function optimally. It is this process of improving the cells energy production which decreases pain, inflammation and encourages healing.

What can laser therapy treat?

Laser therapy has many benefits. At DogsBody Health we use laser therapy in the treatment of muscle and joint pain, soft tissue injuries, healing of surgical scars and wounds and arthritis.

What kind of laser does DogsBody Health use for laser treatments on dogs?

DogsBody Health has many years' experience of offering laser therapy treatments. We have undergone training on the use of our specific laser unit. Our laser unit has a maximum power output of 30 watts and uses both 850nm and 980nm wavelengths to treat the conditions most effectively we specialise in. These wavelengths are the ones most frequently used in clinical trials and have the most supporting clinical evidence. We keep abreast of current laser research and our J-Ray laser software is regularly updated with the most current clinical protocols.

How many laser treatments will a dog need?

During a consultation we will discuss a suitable treatment regime with you. Chronic conditions will usually take longer to treat than acute conditions and some dogs may benefit from ongoing laser and massage treatments to keep them healthy. Treatments can be as short as a few minutes or if treating multiple sites, sessions will be longer.

Treatments may initially be every couple of days, then every few days, then once a week, once a fortnight and so on and we will work with you to find a treatment plan that fits your dog's needs, your schedule, and your pocket.
