Your dog’s neck is a sensitive area full of delicate structures that can be injured with collar use. Here’s why we recommend Haqihana harnesses.
Once you’ve walked in a Haqihana harness you won’t want to go back to a collar and nor will your dog.
The neck of your dog contains spinal bones, soft tissues including muscles, tendons and ligaments, blood vessels, nerves, oesophagus (food pipe), trachea (windpipe), lymphatic vessels and glands. Basically, very similar to our own necks. When a dog pulls against their collar, it can cause choking, and also damage to these other sensitive structures.
Pulling on the leash can cause audible choking sounds and run the risk of more serious complications later on in life. Problems that may be aggravated by collar use include intervertebral disc disease and collapsed trachea. Yanking on the dog’s neck from its owner can be akin to a whiplash type injury during which there is a sharp change of direction and velocity. Older dogs with less robust musculature or arthritis may risk muscle and joint pain from collar use.
If you are looking to use a harness for your dog’s welfare, sadly you will find many on the market are very poorly designed. A well-fitted harness should not inhibit the movement of the dog’s shoulder blade and forelimb. Many on the market cut directly across the front of the shoulder and impact on free movement of the dog’s front limb which can also cause muscle and joint pain. Many have excessive amounts of material which rub the coat and have multiple areas of friction. Some have fastenings which sit over the top of the shoulder muscles and pinch the shoulder blades.
A Y- or H-shaped harness is the most ergonomic design as they permit the limb to move forwards and backwards without rubbing or pressure. These harnesses have a neck strap that sits in front of the shoulder, a slim strap running between the shoulder blades to fasten to a girth strap around the torso and secure with a strap which runs between the legs.
In the event that your dog pulls, the pressure is directed onto the front of the chest and not going to cause harm like it can when pressure is exerted on the neck.
